Abstract
Bathing was once about an empathetic relationship \nwith nature; exposing oneself to the environment and \nletting nature becoming a part of oneself to cleanse \nand purify the body and mind. As a society, we live \nin a world where the acceleration of technology has \nconnected us with a digital world that is always at our \nfingertips; with speed and efficiency at the forefront. \nEven our bathing process has been accelerated. \nBathing was once a process of a public session \nlasting an entire morning or afternoon, and now \ndone by taking a ten minute shower in isolation, \ncompletely removed from nature. The journey \nwithin bathing is intended to be accompanied by \nfriends, family, neighbours and welcomed guests \nas a community exercise of social discourse and \ncollective purification. Public bathing was near \nextinction after World War II with the emergence \nof urban sprawl accompanied by the development \nof larger homes. In particular, the sauna shifted \nfrom an open communal experience, to a private \nand isolated action within the confinements of the \ndwelling. As a society, technology has us cognitively \nprocessing at rapid speeds and for long durations, influencing a pandemic of stress and mental health \nissues globally. People need more opportunities to \nstep away where time stands still and technology \nis muted, to detox and cleanse their mind of the \nstresses of the day. Bathing is about a journey of \nspiritually and physically immersing the body’s \nsensuality in a relationship with nature, to cleanse \nboth the body and the mind. The framework of \npublic bathing is more necessary than ever and \nwith the city of Sudbury already having a deeply \nrooted sauna culture from Finnish immigration in \nthe late nineteenth century, now is an appropriate \ntime to re-introduce a public sauna as an outlet \nto cleansing. An opportunity arises to connect \nto the lake culture that already exists in Sudbury, \nby experiencing the journey to a floating sauna \nlocated in the heart of Sudbury on Ramsey Lake. \nThis can further support the summer canoe culture \nand the winter ice fishing culture already identified, \nas a community nexus built on linking the journey \nwith nature, as a social hub, and most importantly \ncleansing the body and the mind.
