Abstract
Da metà Ottocento, mentre il turismo borghese, avendo scoperto piaceri e benefici della villeggiatura marina, “colonizza” i litorali italiani, si diffonde negli stessi luoghi - seppure a conveniente distanza - un altro genere di turismo, i cui protagonisti sono i bambini. \nDopo il primo Ospizio Marino, costruito a Viareggio fra il 1861 e il 1869, l’esperienza si ripete infatti al Lido di Venezia, lungo il litorale di Palermo e nelle spiagge fra Rimini e Riccione. \nQuesto articolo ricostruisce la genesi e le vicende della diffusione degli ospizi marini e delle colonie di vacanza lungo le coste italiane, fino agli anni Sessanta del Novecento, sottolineando il ruolo sociale di queste istituzioni, ma anche la centralità che questi edifici possono assumere oggi nei piani e nei programmi di riqualificazione urbana delle città del turismo balneare.
