Esta dissertação visa o estudo da obra de Afrânio Pessoa (1930-2017), pintor do Piauí, na perspectiva histórica, estética, iconológica e simbólica, e na sua trajetória evolutiva, com ênfase nas vertentes mítica e onírica, comparadas com a obra de uma pintora sua contemporânea, Martha Telles (1930-2001). Seguimos, no caso de Afrânio Pessoa, as suas vivências, exposições, estudos, aprendizagens; as aulas ministradas nas Universidades Federal do Piauí, os estudos nas Escolas de Belas Artes do Rio de Janeiro e as vertentes criativas do seu percurso, tão marcado pelas características do viver nordestino. No caso de Martha Telles, os estudos na Escola de Belas Artes de Lisboa e Porto, do ensino nas Universidades de Montreal e de Moçambique. São trajetórias vividas pelos nossos dois pintores aqui contemplados, que permitem destacar aspectos coincidentes nos seus processos de fatura e no seu riquíssimo mundo criativo. É especialmente enfatizada a estrutura mítica e onírica comum a ambos os artistas, plena de carga aurática, que muito valoriza as suas obras.
