Abstract
Jane Hathaway, Ohio Eyalet Üniversitesi’nde tarih profesörü olarak çalışmakta ve Osmanlı dönemi Mısır tarihi ile haremağaları konusunda yetkin bir konuma sahiptir. Bu konularda yazılmış çok fazla kitap, makale ve tebliğleri bulunmaktadır. Yazmış olduğu bu kitap ile haremağaları ve Osmanlı hareminin gelmiş geçmiş en etkili haremağası olan Beşir Ağa hakkında literatüre önemli bir katkı sağlamıştır. Türkçe olarak haremağaları üzerine yazılmış kayda değer bir eser bulunmamaktadır. Kitabın çevirisi de bu bakımdan önem arz etmektedir.
