Abstract
Emperor Frederick II died on 13 December 1250 in Castel Fiorentino, in Puglia, while his clash with the Comuni and the papacy reached its peak. The event left its mark on future centuries, both in history and in the collective imaginary. This paper accurately reconstructs the development of the narrative paths which transformed the figure of the emperor into a mythomoteur of opposing political factions and ideo-logies. Some threads lead from one chronicle to another, from one narrative to another, and show how that natural death became a murder committed by the son Manfred, and later the subject of an ambiguous prophecy by the court philosopher and astronomer Michele Scotus. Intersecting points were first Saba Malaspina, then Martin of Opava, Franciscus Pipinus and Giovanni Villani, finally and in a particular way – in a Tuscany split between the Guelph and Ghibelline front – Dante and his commentators.
