Risk factors associated with stillbirth in dairy cattle

Abstract
This thesis presents an investigation of the associations of herd level risk factors with stillbirth. It describes the impact of stillbirth on performance. This research was completed using 162 herds in central and western Canada between January 1st, 2001 and July 31st, 2006. The incidence of stillbirth in these herds ranged from 0% to 17.3%, with a mean value of 7.6%. Frequent observation of calving cows was associated with a 44% reduction in the rate of stillbirth. The delivery of a stillborn calf was associated with lower milk production in early lactation (-0.9kg/d for first parity cows and -2.42 kg/d for mature cows). Cows that delivered a live born calf were 16% more likely to become pregnant than cows that delivered a stillborn calf. There was no difference in days open in first parity animals, but there was a difference in mature cows. Stillbirth was not associated with an increased risk of culling.
