Abstract

fetched live from OpenAlex

Bauxite residue is an alkaline mining residue produced during the production of alumina by the Bayer process. This residue was used in mineral carbonation to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from the smokestacks of aluminum smelters in Quebec. In this thesis, the carbonation in aqueous and solid phase were evaluated at room temperature. The aqueous phase tests were carried out on suspensions with 40, 50 and 60 % pulp density with 10 % CO₂ injected at a pressure of 150 psi. The gas-solid reaction has been prioritized and optimized with regard to CO2 absorption and mineralization. Residue moisture, gas flow rate, CO₂ concentration and reaction time were evaluated on the carbonation of pure bauxite residue in a fixed bed of 1.5 L capacity. Subsequently, to improve the capacity of CO₂ sequestration, experiments were carried out with the addition of calcium amendments: a gas desulfurization by-product from Rio Tinto, named Aqua-Catalyzed Hydrated Lime (CHAC) and Lime Kiln Dust (LKD). The additions were made to provide an equivalent of 10 % CaO to the residue. The results showed that the aqueous phase reaction was not viable for the capture of CO₂, as the carbonate ions formed during the dissolution of CO₂ could not precipitate without a nucleation surface, due to the low saturation of the solution. Thus, the residue should be stored in suspensions until the carbonates precipitate. Carbonation by the gas-solid route eliminates this problem and improves CO₂ sequestration. Among the parameters evaluated, the only with a remarkable effect on gas-solid carbonation of the pure residue was the moisture content of the residue, since the porosity and gas diffusion depend on it. The optimum moisture content was 26 % and the resulting sequestration capacity was 12.3 kg.t⁻¹ of bauxite residue with 10 % CO₂. Addition of CHAC increased CO₂ sequestration to 81.5 kg.t⁻¹ of residue with 44 % humidity. However, the use of gases diluted with 5 % and 1 % CO₂ reduced this capacity to 75.5 and 60.2 kg.t⁻¹ respectively. On an industrial scale, the treatment of effluents with 10 % CO₂ using the bauxite residue mixed with CHAC could avoid the emissions of 6.6 kt of CO₂ per year in the province of Quebec.
