Este artigo assenta em entrevistas a 28 mulheres com diversas idades e tipos de deficiência. Consideraram-se os relatos de episódios contendo atitudes e práticas de discriminação com enfoque nos últimos cinco anos. As violências institucional e simbólica parecem ser os tipos de violência que mais afetam estas mulheres. O artigo também refere as práticas com que as mulheres reagem às discriminações sentidas e as estratégias de sobrevivência que constroem para minorar as consequências das violências a que se encontram mais expostas. Contrariando parte significativa da literatura, onde se afirma que é nas suas famílias que as mulheres com deficiência sofrem os piores atos de discriminação e violência, os relatos mostram que o espaço familiar não é, para a maioria, um espaço particularmente hostil.
