Abstract

ABSTRACT Mining activities, particularly smelters, can lead to the formation of degraded, barren, or metal-contaminated ecosystems. Resource poor ecosystems such as rocky outcrops with thin soils are more susceptible to degradation compared to other systems, and natural regeneration on this habitats can be complicated or even impossible due to erosion, lack of resources or seed sources and soil acidification caused by pollution. Restoration projects may be necessary to regenerate vegetation on polluted outcrops, often involving interventionist methods such as soil transplant, fertilization, and massive tree planting. The aim of our study was to test the effectiveness of a restoration strategy based on mimicking natural succession in the boreal forest by using bryophytes as a germination substrate to protect and promote the establishment of tree seedlings (Pinus banksiana, Betula papyrifera, Alnus viridis ssp. crispa, Thuja occidentalis). This treatment was compared to a control treatment, where the substrate was local soil, and a liming treatment, commonly used in restoration projects to increase soil pH and reduce heavy metal toxicity. The three treatments were applied to sixty 1 m² units located on five barren outcrops at different distances from the pollution source, the Horne smelter in Rouyn-Noranda, Canada. Each tree species was seeded at a density of 100 seeds.m-2 on all units. Our results showed that wind exposure had the most significant effect on our experimental units, potentially masking any negative effect of soil heavy metal concentration on seed establishment. The bryophyte treatment had the highest vegetation establishment success for low wind speeds, with a jack pine seedling establishment rate of 12.5% compared to 5% and 4% for liming and control treatments. Our strategy using bryophytes has the potential to be used forrestoration projects on rocky outcrops by relying on natural processes; we recommend protecting installations from wind to improve vegetation establishment success.

Not calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. The Gemma side is a direct model label for every work in the frame, read from the title-only record. The Codex side is a classifier learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and calibrated to design-weighted sample rates; fields without enough sample support carry no Codex call. Candidate is the union of the two sides; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels.

Machine scores (provisional)

The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.

Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
