« Plus d’un tiers de la population mondiale réside à moins de 100 km de la côte, et cette proportion devrait atteindre 50 % d’ici 2030 (Bilkovic et al., 2017). Une grande partie de la population de la planète se trouve donc directement exposée aux risques côtiers, notamment l’érosion, les inondations et les phénomènes extrêmes tels que les ouragans et les tsunamis. Pendant des décennies, des structures de protection côtière en dur (par exemple, des digues, des brise-lames) ont été mises en place pour se protéger contre ces risques. Toutefois, ces structures ont également eu des effets néfastes sur l’environnement, notamment par la perte de biodiversité due au remplacement de l’habitat et la perte de zones humides côtières en raison de la modification des réserves de sédiments essentiels (Bilkovic et al., 2017).
