Abstract
A tranquil summer walk around the ponds and paths at Guelph’s West End Community Centre green space. T his slide show includes eight path-side wild flowers, identified with their botanical names. Located in northwest Guelph ward 4, the 1.1 hectare (2.7 ac) park features a children's playground and four stormwater management ponds, all enclosed by a paved path network. A 3-part tubular pergola commands a prominent site overlooking the largest pond. Such ponds receive surface runoff, allowing sediments and road contaminants to settle out before slowly discharging the water into the ground and nearby water streams, such as that draining the West End ponds and adjacent Earle Brimblecomb Park into the Speed River 1.7 kilometres downstream. Since storm water pond levels fluctuate, and their temperatures are relatively warm, posted signage prohibits pond activities including swimming and skating. Adjacent to the 2001 Community Centre, the park is bordered by Imperial Road to the east and the Metrolinx rail line to the north. The Mitchell family first farmed this area in 1834. Their woodlot was preserved during residential development as parkland in 2002, and the nearby Mitchell Woods Public School opened in 1999.
