O niepowodzeniach amerykańskiej polityki zagranicznej i bezpieczeństwa w ostatniej dekadzie napisano już wiele tysięcy stron, doszukując się odpowiedzi na pytania, dlaczego tak się stało, dlaczego świat nie jest — mimo bezwzględnej dominacji USA — bardziej bezpieczny, niż był w czasie zimnej wojny. Dla niektórych wnioski płynące z badań nakazują nawet zastanawiać się, czy USA tak naprawdę zależy na pokojowym i bezpiecznym świecie. Najlepszy przykład dla takich rozmyślań, z racji długości trwania i wpływu na resztę świata, może stanowić konflikt bliskowschodni, gdzie Amerykanie — jak wielu uważa — albo nie chcą pozytywnego rozwiązania, ponieważ istniejąca tam sytuacja odpowiada ich interesom, albo są za słabi, by narzucić stronom jakieś rozstrzygnięcie, albo konflikt ten nie ma rozwiązania i przestanie istnieć dopiero wówczas, kiedy ostatecznie wygra Izrael. W każdym razie jedno jest pewne — globalna polityka bezpieczeństwa Waszyngtonu, podobnie jak kiedyś Wielkiej Brytanii i Francji, bardziej niż kreowania wizji nowego świata potrzebuje lojalnych kolaborantów we wszystkich ważnych częściach świata. Realizacja polityki USA wobec świata islamu wydaje się jednak oczywistym zaprzeczeniem takiego zapotrzebowania, bowiem zwykły człowiek „z islamskiej ulicy” uważa USA za wroga. Co wobec tego powoduje brak sukcesów Ameryki w ich polityce wobec świata muzułmańskiego w XXI wieku, szczególnie na Środkowym i Bliskim Wschodzie?
