Abstract

fetched live from OpenAlex

The "Africa" was built in 1873 by William Power of Kingston, Ontario. She was a wooden propeller made for the passenger and packet trade. She sailed on the lower lakes, but in the early 1880s, she ran as a passenger steamer out of Owen Sound, Georgian Bay, along with the "Magnet" and "Spartan." When she burned at the Owen Sound wharf, she was rebuilt as a steam barge. On October 7, 1895, the old "Africa" with sail barge "Severn" in tow, both loaded with coal and headed from Ashtabula, Ohio to Owen Sound, were hit by a gale off Sand Bay, Michigan. The sails of the "Severn" were shattered. Both vessels rolled heavily in the seas. The tow line was cut and the vessels began to drift. When darkness fell, the "Africa" was missing. Her crew of twelve was lost. Only her lifeboat and a package of letters belonging to Miss Lee, the cook, survived. The "Severn" crew fought to keep the boat afloat until she struck a reef near Boat Cove. When water lashed over the decks, the old boat began to break up, however, the crew hung on until daybreak when rescued by fishermen.

Not calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. Learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and 10,348 direct Gemma labels. Candidate is the union of thresholded teacher heads; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels or direct frontier model labels.

Machine scores (provisional)

The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.

Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
