Abstract
O processo de desenvolvimento urbano sempre acontece respaldado por uma atividade econômica que o desencadeia. Dentre essas atividades, a mineração tem sido responsável pelo crescimento de muitas cidades no mundo, dentre elas Sudbury (Canadá), e que não foi diferente no Brasil, bem como no estado da Bahia. O nosso caso de estudo, a Chapada Diamantina, situada na parte central do estado da Bahia, teve seu desenvolvimento alavancado pela mineração (principalmente de diamante), uma das atividades econômicas mais importantes existentes no mundo, já que tudo ou praticamente tudo que necessitamos nos dias atuais, é mineral. Dessa maneira, no século XIX, com o auge da exploração de diamante, começaram a surgir, junto aos garimpos, os núcleos urbanos, embriões das cidades, que é o foco deste trabalho, no qual procuramos evidenciar sua formação e dinâmica. Essas cidades se tornaram centros dessa atividade e elas tiveram um desenvolvimento urbano surpreendentemente rápido, com melhoria das edificações, consolidação do comércio, introdução de uma incipiente industrialização, além do crescimento demográfico.
