Abstract
“The season of mists and mellow fruitfulness” was John Keats’ romantic vision of autumn. For gardeners, it is the season of rewards, harvesting their output from a year’s endeavours. Some deciduous temperate trees and shrubs provide visual rewards, clothing gardens and indeed entire landscapes in exuberantly colourful displays as foliage changes from green into yellow and red. This is an international phenomenon with stunning natural extravaganzas developing in temperate areas of: Canada, the Eastern United States of America, Argentina, Chile, southern Brazil, northern Japan, Korea, northern and eastern China, north of the European Alps, the Caucasus Region near the Black Sea, and on New Zealand’s South Island.
