Barriers to Physical Activity Perceived by Expats and Spouses in Delhi

Abstract
The current study aimed to investigate levels of physical activity and individual and environmental determinants thereof amongst a convenience sample of 182 expats and spouses relocated to Delhi. Data collected through an online questionnaire, using the IPAQ short form, showed a quarter of the expatriates were insufficiently active. The expected influence of environmental factors was not found as only perceived behaviour control predicted physical activity. However intention was predicted by perceived behaviour control and physical environment. Inactive expats scored significantly different on all but one of the thirteen individual and environmental determinants included. It is recommended to target a limited group of expats with physical activity promotion aimed at increasing perceived behaviour control. The limitations of this study and further research suggestions are discussed.
