Events and incidents such as the 9/11 terrorist attacks in New York, the “East Coast Blackout” (USA and Canada), hurricanes Katrina and Rita, the Indian Ocean tsunami, the volcanic ash cloud crisis and global epidemics of, for instance, SARS and avian and swine flu have shown that in order for organisations to survive crises and disasters they need to be able to resume and continue their mission-critical activities a very short time after the disruption of their business. It is often argued (Blos et al. 2010; Kildow 2011; Whitley and Zusman 2009) that a well-delineated business continuity plan can be the difference between a resilient operation and one incapable of coping with the unimaginable.
