Gli esseri animali sono continuamente sottoposti a stimolazioni provenienti tanto dall’ambiente circostante quanto dall’interno dell’organismo. Non tutti gli stimoli sono di tipo transitorio, ma alcuni di questi possono persistere nel tempo alla stessa intensità che possiedono quando applicati. L’organismo, vista la sua capacità finita di trasmettere e codificare informazioni, ha la necessità di sviluppare un meccanismo di adattamento agli stimoli persistenti. Questo tipo di meccanismo prende il nome di adattamento sensoriale periferico ed ha inizio nel sistema nervoso periferico a livello dei recettori. \nNello specifico l’oggetto di interesse di questo elaborato è la risposta all’adattamento sensoriale periferico, cioè come i recettori comunicano al sistema nervoso centrale che lo stimolo persiste. Si è quindi voluto elaborare un modello unitario della risposta di adattamento sensoriale periferico in grado di convergere i risultati ottenuti da esperimenti condotti su differenti specie animali in risposta a stimoli diversi. Questo tipo di processo prende il nome di consilienza, cioè la convergenza di risultati ottenuti da differenti linee di studio o approcci ad un dato quesito. \nL’elaborato ripercorrerà i passi compiuti da Willy Wong, professore dell’università di Toronto, che ha messo a punto un unico andamento della risposta all’adattamento analizzando gli studi condotti nell’ambito della fisiologia sensoriale negli ultimi cento anni, mostrando elementi comuni che esistono in quasi tutte le modalità sensoriali (propriocezione, tatto, gusto, udito, vista, olfatto, elettroricezione e temperatura) e le specie animali. \nLa conclusione a cui si è giunti è che indipendentemente dal meccanismo o dalla modalità, o dal periodo di tempo in cui è stato condotto lo studio, la coerenza delle prove fornisce un nuovo risultato fondamentale della neurofisiologia.
