Abstract

fetched live from OpenAlex

Macropore flow plays a key role in the rapid movement of water through agricultural soils, especially in subsurface-drained fields where preferential flow paths transport water and pollutants quickly to groundwater and surface water bodies.Traditional drainage models often overlook macropore flow, leading to inaccurate predictions of water movement and contaminant transport. To address this, a new stochastic approach has been developed and incorporated into the DRAINMOD model. The new approach simulates macropore flow probabilistically by incorporating macropore/crack morphology and distributions, offering a more realistic representation of macropore networks. The model simulates flow in both continuous and deadend macropores. In addition, laminar and turbulent flow in macropores and soil cracks were considered, as per the Reynolds number.Hagen-Poiseuille's law is used for laminar flow, while turbulent macropore flow is simulated using the Manning equation. Two agricultural sites were selected to evaluate the model, one in Iowa and another in Ohio. The Iowa site was used to simulate flow in cylindrical pores, and the Ohio site was used for testing water flow in soil cracks. Two calibration approaches were applied. In the first approach, DRAINMOD was calibrated using observed drain outflow, while in the second approach, DRAINMOD was calibrated using only the slow-response component of observed drain outflows, representing soil matrix flow.A hydrograph separation using a digital filter technique was applied to divide subsurface drain outflow into slow and fast-response flows, with fast-response representing preferential flow.At the Iowa site in Nashua, six years of field data (1990)(1991)(1992)(1993)(1994)(1995) were used. The soil is moderately well to poorly drained with significant rainfall during the growing season. Results showed that DRAINMOD/Macropore accurately simulated subsurface drainage.Preferential flow contributed an average of 9% to annual subsurface drainage using the first calibration, with monthly NSE values of 0.88 and 0.83 for calibration (1990-1992) and validation (1993-1995) periods, respectively. With the second approach, the average preferential flow increased to 18%, and the monthly NSE values were 0.68 and 0.71.Hydrograph separation estimated fast-response flow at 21%, closely aligning with the model's 18%, validating its performance. At the Ohio site, located in the Western Lake Erie Basin watershed, four years of data (2017-2020) from a field with Blount silt loam soil, a somewhat poorly drained soil, were used.Preferential flow accounted for 15% of total drainage using the first approach. The model performed well, with monthly NSE values of 0. 76 for calibration (2017-2018) and 0.81 for validation (2019-2020) periods.Using the second calibration approach, the crack flow contribution increased to 22%, matching the fast-response component estimated from hydrograph separation. In conclusion, the new stochastic macropore flow component in DRAINMOD effectively simulates both matrix and preferential water movement in subsurface-drained fields. This thesis is dedicated to the loving memory of my mother, Mrs. Nasrin Mostafavi, who taught me the value of perseverance and Not calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. The Gemma side is a direct model label for every work in the frame, read from the title-only record. The Codex side is a classifier learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and calibrated to design-weighted sample rates; fields without enough sample support carry no Codex call. Candidate is the union of the two sides; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels.
