Abstract
Kulturbauten sind Kristallisationspunkte des städtischen Lebens, die als solche ganz gezielt als Steuerinstrumente und Taktgeber der Stadtentwicklung und des Stadtmarketings eingesetzt werden. Neben Konzerthäusern und Museen sind dabei Bibliotheken – als öffentliche Bildungsorte mit hoher Frequentierung und weit reichender Ausstrahlung – eine der dominierenden Gebäudetypologien, mit denen im Zeichen tendenzieller Monofunktionalität der Innenstädte und der Konkurrenz von virtuellem und öffentlichem Raum soziale Zusammenhänge durch Architektur neu hergestellt werden sollen. Doch nicht nur im urbanen Zusammenhang, auch in ihrer Funktion und internen Organisation unterliegen Bibliotheken deutlich einem Wandel: digitale Medien gilt es zu archivieren und zu präsentieren, das Nutzerspektrum verändert sich wie die Gesellschaft in Zeiten demographischer Dynamik und neuer Lernkulturen ihrer verschiedenen Zielgruppen.
