Abstract
We present evidence for the flavor-changing neutral current decay [Formula presented] and a measurement of the branching fraction for the related process [Formula presented] , where [Formula presented] is either an [Formula presented] or a [Formula presented] pair. These decays are highly suppressed in the standard model, and they are sensitive to contributions from new particles in the intermediate state. The data sample comprises [Formula presented] [Formula presented] decays collected with the BABAR detector at the SLAC PEP-II [Formula presented] storage ring. Averaging over [Formula presented] isospin and lepton flavor, we obtain the branching fractions [Formula presented] and [Formula presented], where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. The significance of the [Formula presented] signal is over [Formula presented], while for [Formula presented] it is [Formula presented]. © 2003 The American Physical Society.
