Abstract
Frailty is an age-associated syndrome that exposes the elderly to adverse outcomes increasing the risk to incapacity. This study aimed to describe frailty prevalence and its associated factors in older adults. A cross-sectional, population based study was carried out in the city of Pelotas, Brazil. The Edmonton Frail Scale (EFS) was used to asses frailty in a sample sized 1,399 individuals aged 60 years old or older. Frailty prevalence was 13,8%, of which 5,6% was mild frailty, 4% moderate and 1,2% severe. Advanced age, female gender, living without a partner, lower education, higher number of comorbidities and physical inactivity were associated to frailty. Epilepsy, ischemia, heart failure, Parkinson's disease and diabetes were the morbidities most associated with frailty. THE EFS is an alternative to health services in frailty assessment, useful to identify and rehabilitate frail individuals.
