L’obésité est un problème émergent qui a des répercussions en santé et en sécurité du travail (SST). La prévalence de blessures musculo-squelettiques chez les individus obèses et les coûts indirects (non médicaux) sont plus élevés que ceux des travailleurs ayant un poids santé. Sachant qu’une hausse soutenue du taux d’obésité chez les travailleurs est observée au Canada, il est important de s’intéresser à la problématique de l’obésité liée au travail. Les risques de blessures au dos survenues au travail sont très élevés et la profession la plus touchée est celle de manutentionnaire. On connait peu l’effet de l’obésité sur les façons d’effectuer les tâches de manutention. L’objectif de cette étude est d’analyser les stratégies de travail des manutentionnaires obèses et de les comparer à celles de ceux ayant un poids santé. Tests en laboratoire Dix-sept manutentionnaires obèses et 20 autres ayant un poids santé ont participé à des évaluations en laboratoire. Les tâches étudiées étaient des transferts de caisses d’un convoyeur à un diable et vice versa. Le poids de la charge, la hauteur de saisie et de dépôt, de même que la configuration de l’aire de travail ont été adaptés pour examiner les façons de faire des participants. Plusieurs mesures biomécaniques, incluant les moments de force au dos, la posture et le déplacement des caisses, ont été prises afin de juger de l’aspect sécuritaire et efficient des méthodes de manutention observées. L’influence des facteurs anthropométriques Les résultats démontrent clairement que les facteurs anthropométriques des manutentionnaires obèses induisent un chargement lombaire maximal nettement plus important (>23 %) que chez les autres lors du levage et du dépôt de caisses sur un diable ou sur un convoyeur. Peu de différences ont été observées au niveau des attitudes posturales en raison d’une variabilité inter-individu très présente au sein des deux groupes de participants. Le poids des manutentionnaires a permis d’expliquer 57 % de la variation du moment de force maximal transverse au dos lors du soulèvement de caisses du sol. Ces résultats suggèrent que la surcharge pondérale d’un travailleur obèse entraîne indubitablement un effet additif significatif sur les structures musculo-squelettiques du dos. Cet impact biomécanique expose les manutentionnaires obèses à un risque plus important de développer un trouble musculo-squelettique lors de la manutention de charges. Abstract Obesity is an emerging problem that seems to be involved in occupational health and safety issues. The prevalence of musculoskeletal injuries in obese individuals and indirect (non-medical) costs are higher than for workers having a healthy weight. A sustained increase in the obesity rate of workers is being seen in Canada, so it is important to be interested in the obesity-work issue. Today the risk of back injuries during work activities remains very high, and the profession producing the most disorders is still that of material handler. There is very little evidence on the impact of obesity on the way handling tasks are performed. The objective of this study is to analyze the work strategies of obese material handlers and compare them to those of material handlers having a healthy weight. The biomechanical and ergonomic impacts of 17 obese handlers and 20 handlers of healthy weight were evaluated in the laboratory. The studied tasks involved transferring boxes from a conveyor to a hand truck and vice versa. The weight of the load, the pick-up and deposit height, and the configuration of the work area were modified to examine the participants’ methods. Several biomechanical measurements were taken, notably including the moments of force on the back, posture and box movement to assess the safety and efficiency of the observed handling methods. The results clearly show that the anthropometric factors of obese material handlers result in clearly greater (>23%) maximum lumbar loading during the lifting and deposit of boxes on a hand truck or conveyor. Few differences were observed in postural attitudes due to a very present inter-individual variability within the two groups of participants. The handlers’ weight explained 57% of the variation in the transverse maximum moment of force on the back when raising a box from the ground. These results suggest that a worker’s obesity leads unavoidably to a significant additive effect on the musculoskeletal structures of the back. This biomechanical impact exposes obese material handlers to a greater risk of developing a musculoskeletal disorder during load handling.
