Un projet de développement fait appel à divers éléments que ce soit sur le plan financier, matériel, logiciel et humain, au-delà de tout le capital humain demeure l’élément central. Comme dans beaucoup de régions au Québec, la région du Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean est aussi confrontée au problème de décroissance de la population et de pénurie de main-d’oeuvre. La région du Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean par l’intermédiaire de l’UQAC accueille chaque année beaucoup d’étudiants internationaux. Plusieurs de ces étudiants après leurs études retournent dans leur pays d’origine, d’autres cependant envisagent de faire leur carrière professionnelle au Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean. Que ce soit à l’université ou dans la vie sociale, les étudiants internationaux traversent des situations et des moments qui souvent sont déterminants dans leur décision de poursuivre ou non leur carrière professionnelle au Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean. Les résultats de cette recherche qualitative ont permis d’avoir une idée générale sur le processus d’intégration, les raisons et les motivations qui peuvent amener certains étudiants internationaux à poursuivre leur carrière professionnelle au Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean en contribuant au développement du territoire régional. De plus, les apports des étudiants internationaux et des travailleurs immigrants pour résoudre les problèmes de main-d’oeuvre, de décroissance démographique et d’augmentation de la diversité en région sont abordés dans la recherche. Il est apparu que si l'emploi demeure la raison majeure pour s’installer en région, d’autres éléments comme l’acception de la population locale, la nature et l’environnement, le bas coût de la vie et le style de vie moins stressant font également partie des facteurs qui peuvent inciter les étudiants internationaux à demeurer au Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean pour y faire leur carrière professionnelle.
