Abstract
Au IIe siècle après J.-C., la romanisation allait bon train dans nos régions. Les Romains firent de Tongres une grande ville fortifiée, traversée par une voie très fréquentée. Un riche Gaulois, Marcus Probius Burrus, saisit avec enthousiasme les opportunités offertes par les Romains. Propriétaire d’une maison à Tongres, d’une villa campagnarde à Tirlemont, d’importantes propriétés et peut-être d’un commerce florissant, siégeant au conseil de la cité, il avait le vent en poupe. C’est notamment grâce à des élites locales du même calibre que Burrus que les Romains sont parvenus à s’enraciner profondément dans notre région.
