Abstract
En demografía, es común explicar las diferencias en la formación de las uniones conyugales por las características de los individuos que componen la pareja, como pueden ser la educación, el nivel de ingresos o su religión. En Canadá, se encuentran diferencias importantes entre las diferentes provincias, que no se pueden explicar solo por estas características individuales. Una es la importancia de las uniones consensuales en el Quebec; pero hay otras menos conocidas. En Ontario, casi todos los matrimonios son celebrados por sacerdotes o pastores, mientras que la mitad o más lo son por lo civil en Quebec y en la \nColumbia Británica. También, en Quebec, notarios y particulares pueden celebrar matrimonios desde \n2002 y la introducción de esta forma de celebración coincide con un aumento del número de matrimonios. \nUtilizamos estos ejemplos para explorar el papel del contexto socio-histórico en la transformación \nde los procesos que rigen la formación de las uniones conyugales en Canadá.
