Abstract

fetched live from OpenAlex

\n« Recognized as a highly demanding occupation both physically and psychologically, the risk of occupational injury for the ambulance services sector is described as extreme by the Commission des normes de l'équité de la santé et de la sécurité du travail (CNESST). This research focuses on psychological distress following an occupational injury in the paramedic. More specifically, the study aims to understand the link between psychological distress (Préville et al., 1995) of paramedic and social support (Vaux, 1988; 1992). The study assumes that psychological distress is significantly and negatively related to perceived social support (hypothesis 1) and that there is a significant difference in perceived level of social support by type of occupational injury (hypothesis 2). The sample consists of 44 paramedics, practising in various administrative regions of Quebec, who have suffered a short-term occupational injury. Participants were solicited electronically through the voluntary completion of a secure online questionnaire. In the light of the results, the first research hypothesis, validated by an explanatory correlational research design, is confirmed. The results indicate a strong, significant and negative link between the psychological distress experienced by paramedics and the social support they received. The second hypothesis, validated by a comparative estimate, is also confirmed. The results suggest a significant difference from a social support perspective, in terms of the nature of the injury. The average level of perceived social support is higher among professionals with a physical occupational injury compared to those with a psychological injury. In conclusion, it is possible to believe that the higher the level of social support perceived by the paramedic, the less psychological distress there is. Finally, it would be appropriate for future studies to question the reasons for this worrying difference in perceived social support in terms of the nature of the injury.-- Mot(s) clé(s) en anglais : occupational injury, social support, psychological distress, paramedic, public safety. »--

Machine scores (provisional)

The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.

Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
