Le site de Baoussé-Roussé (Roches rouges) à Vintimille dans lequel s'ouvrent les grottes de Grimaldi est bien connu aussi sur le plan de l'anthropologie, depuis les découvertes de plusieurs sépultures d'hommes de "Cro-Magnon" par Emile Rivière. D'abord, l'Homme de Menton mis au jour le 26 mars 1872 dans la grotte du Cavillon, puis trois squelettes en 1873 dans la grotte de Baousso da Torre et enfin deux enfants en 1874 et 1875 dans la caverne, qui portera ensuite ce nom. C'est la première cavité que l'on rencontre après le vallon de Saint Louis faisant frontière entre la France et l'Italie. C'est le 22 avril 1900 que S.A.S le Prince Albert 1er de Monaco inaugurera les fouilles de la grotte des Enfants sur le site de Grimaldi, aux Baoussé-Roussé. Ces recherches conduites par le chanoine Léonce de Villeneuve permirent de mettre au jour une importante séquence paléolithique, montrant au-dessus d'un pauvre niveau moustérien, de nombreux foyers du Paléolithique supérieur (attribués par Emile Cartailhac à l'Aurignacien)
