Abstract

fetched live from OpenAlex

The novel tells about an ugly man named Michael K who agrees to take his mother, Anna K, to Prince Albert from Cape Town, which the civil war is taking place. His mother is one of those who are regretting his ugly face.On the way to Prince Albert, she passes away, leaving Michael K alone in the anarchic world. However, Michael K decides to continue his journey to Prince Albert in order to bury his mother's ashes. The aim of this research is to find the meanings of relationship between Michael K and his mother, as seen in his decision to take her to Prince Albert. There are two problems to answer in this study, namely: (1) How are Michael K and his mother described in the novel?(2) What are the meanings of Michael K's decision to take Anna K to Prince Albert? This research is a library research. The primary data of the research is the novel itself and the secondary sources are taken from books, journals, essays and internet. This research uses the psychological approach. There are two theories applied in this study, the theory of hierarchy of needs and that of character and characterization. There are two findings in this research. The first finding is the characteristics of Michael K and his mother.Michael K is ugly, young, strong, average and kind, while his mother is old, unhealthy and unkind. The second finding is the meanings of Michael K's decision. The figurative meanings of his decision is because he is obligated to take his mother to Prince Albert, supported more by the civil war which breaks out in Cape Town, while the deeper meaning is because Michael K loves his mother unconditionally. The researcher realizes that this research is far from perfect. Therefore, the researcher suggests future researchers discuss this novel from different perspectives. They can discuss the reason(s) behind Anna K's disappointment towards Michael K by using the feminism approach.

Machine scores (provisional)

The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.

Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
