Il riconoscimento, entro gli ordinamenti di molti paesi stranieri, di nuovi modelli di convivenza, generalmente ascrivibili alle unioni civili, siano esse formalizzate tramite accordi oppure tramite partenariati, determina rilevanti problemi di diritto internazionale privato. Tali problemi vengono in questa monografia affrontati nel quadro di un'ampia prospettiva. Individuare il giudice competente o la legge applicabile ad una determinata questione sorta tra soggetti che intrattengono relazioni nel quadro delle unioni civili appare infatti funzionale alla realizzazione di un diritto fondamentale dell'individuo, secondo quanto prevede la Convenzione europea per la salvaguardia dei diritti fondamentali.
