Abstract
A primera ocupació del turó de Montsoriu recula a època ibèrica (s.iii-iv AC).En aquest període, la fortalesa situada al capdamunt del con que forma el turó devia tenir una funció de punt de control visual del territori, sobretot de la vall de Breda i Arbúcies, però també del corredor o pas natural que travessa la vall mitja de la Tordera, entre el massís del Montseny i el Montnegre, i el camí carener que seguint la vall d'Arbúcies s'enfilava vers les planes interiors de Catalunya.Probablement aquesta fou una de les raons fonamentals per al nou establiment militar en època medieval en aquest mateix lloc.Així doncs, en època medieval el turó és de nou ocupat.A mitjans del segle X es construeix en la seva part més enlairada una torre circular de l6 m d'alçada, en un primer moment possiblement exempta i de seguida amb una sèrie de construccions adossades, que formaran el primitiu castell roquer.Aquest castell encimbellat dalt del turó es mantindrà en ús al llarg dels segles XI i XII, i donarà lloc a l'espai conegut com a Recinte Sobirà, que formarà part del castell-palau d'època gòtica, més desenvolupat arquitectònicament.A inicis de l'etapa feudal, els castells roquers esdevingueren construccions característiques de l'ocupació i organització del terrítori, en base a unes estructures fortament militaritzades que actuaven com a centres de domini del seu terme o apendicío.D'aquesta manera, a mitjans del segle x sorgirà en el turó de Montsoriu el nucli físic de poder d'un cabdill d'aquesta nova organització polí-
