Abstract
RESEARCH BACKGROUND: 'Villa Nurbs' by Enric Ruiz-Geli (Cloud 9 Architects) is an experimental architectural project resulting in an organically formed, ecological and futuristic house in Empuriabrava. The project was shown at 'Archaeology of the Digital: Complexity and Convention' - the third exhibition on the development of a strategy for collecting and preserving digital archives at the Canadian Centre for Architecture (CCA). This work was an example of early attempts to use digital tools to move towards a new architecture. RESEARCH CONTRIBUTION: 'Villa Nurbs' involved more than a decade of innovating and inventing new construction methods. Ruiz-Geli collaborated with artist Frederic Amat and ceramicist Toni Cumella to develop the iconic wavelike ceramic plates forming the facade. The mixture of ceramics and plastics optimizes the surface and structure for temperature regulation. The complex geometry is stable but adaptable. The energy-saving roof consists of inflatable plastic bubbles. This project extends Ruiz-Geli's practice at the interface between architecture and art, digital processes and technological material development, to highlight the performative character of architecture and optimise building resources, and to create intelligent structures in emulation of nature. RESEARCH SIGNIFICANCE: 'Villa Nurbs' was 1 of 15 projects selected by the curator Greg Lynn alongside other world-renowned practitioners; each project represented specific theoretical directions and technological experimentation that have influenced recent architectural history. The exhibition resulted in a new acquisition strategy for born-digital material and the formation of a digital archive composed of the 15 projects. 'Villa Nurbs' has been extensively published in Icon magazine, designboom, e-flux, Metalocus, The Architect's Newspaper, Azure magazine and inhabitat, amongst others.
