Abstract
Brattleboro’s First African Americans An African American family in their 20’s and their infant daughter moved to Brattleboro in 1823. They rented a two-floor wooden building on this site that had been built fifteen years earlier. Andrew, wife Phoebe, and daughter, Susannah Bradshaw were the only African American family among 2,027 residents in Brattleboro. The building was originally a harness shop. Andrew opened a barbershop and offered cleaning services for wool garments, women’s dresses, and bought and sold used clothes. Phoebe opened a dining room that served meals, desserts, soda and beer. The restaurant was well received and Phoebe Bradshaw’s cooking became ‘famous’. The Bradshaw restaurant was the first to serve ice cream in Brattleboro. In 1834 the Bradshaw family bought the building and became the first African American landowners on Brattleboro's Main Street. The local paper was printing articles in favor of slavery. In the 1880’s, the building was taken down and replaced by the Ryther Block that was bought by William Ryther, publisher of the Vermont Phoenix. Andrew Bradshaw died in 1843, at the age of 48 and is buried in Brattleboro’s Prospect Hill Cemetery.
