Abstract
My thesis novel is a construct of multiple narratives, each of which follows the estranged members of a family in crisis. Set in Toronto, the central thread in the story focusses on Vanderlay Bach, a fifty-year-old doctor who, after losing his son to an IED in Afghanistan, watches passively as his world crumbles around him. When Vanderlay finds himself in the drunk tank with an itinerant tattoo artist who plies his trade in parking lots and back allies, Vanderlay finds himself re-evaluating all the things he has taken for granted. While Vanderlay’s daughter, his wife and her parents struggle with their own personal and sometimes imagined demons, Vanderlay embarks on a journey that takes him physically to the shores of Thoreau’s Walden Pond and emotionally back to the family that he has forsaken.
