Abstract
"A császárné a legszebb asszony a világon" - írja gyámfia lelkes szavai alapján Széchenyi a naplójába, egy másik helyen pedig asszonyi angyalnak nevezi, aki a magyarság érdekeiért még felséges férjével is hajlandó szembeszállni. Ez a két dolog, a csodálatos szépség és az őszinte magyarbarátság magyarázza, miért volt I. Ferenc József szomorú sorsú feleségének mindig is kultusza Magyarországon. Brigitte Hamann, a jeles osztrák történész nem mindennapi feladatra vállalkozott, amikor e legendák övezte királyné életsorsának hiteles bemutatását tűzte ki céljául. Hamann nem idealizálja hősnőjét, nem csak az elragadtatás szavait ismeri, nem próbálja meg leplezni Erzsébet nehezen kezelhető tulajdonságait sem. Könyvéből megismerhetjük ezt az egész életében szabadságvágytól fűtött, az udvari etikett börtönében inkább csak vergődő asszonyt, hatalmas képzeletvilágáról árulkodó költészetét, tudásszomját, s egyszersmind képet kapunk a XIX. század második felének társasági (és társadalmi) életéről, szépségápolási és gyermeknevelési praktikáiról, politikai mozgalmairól, a Monarchia boldog békeéveiről, valamint Erzsébetnek a magyar kiegyezésben játszott valóban jelentős szerepéről. A kötet érdekes portrét rajzol egy nem mindennapi egyéniségről a gondtalan bajorországi gyermekkortól a fényes bécsi napokon, a budai koronázás pompáján és a királyné nyugtalan világkóborlásain át egészen meggyilkolásáig.
