EL MEDI FSICLa comarca deIs Ports es troba situada a l'extrem NW del Pas Valencia (fig.1), icorrespon a grans trets a una unitat fisiografica definida per un paisatge tabular caracterstic, l'altitud de la qual oscil.1aentre 800-1200 m. (1).EIs seus lmits coincideixen, cap a ponent, amb els provincials, incloent-hi el sector de Mirambel i La Cuba; cap al Sud ocupen la capl;alera de La Rambla Carbonera fins arribar a la fossa de Cat, i la conca del Riu Montlle abans d'abocar-se a la fossa d'Atzeneta; cap a llevant, segueix la capl;alera de La Rambla de Cervera fins als vessants meridionals de La Serra de Turmell; per ltim, cap al Nord, passa de manera insensible a una altra unitat fisiognlfica: el sector plegat, ja en el transit cap al Baix Arag.Les roques que dominen en aquesta area sn exclusivament d'edat cretacica.Es tracta de potents banes de calcaries que alternen amb paquets de margues i argiles.En general es mant una proporci equilibrada entre aquests paquets de roques dures i blanes.Cap a l'Est, pero, entre El Coll de Querol i Xert, els materials blans van deixant pas a series de litologies dures.Aquest tnlnsit queda marcat a l'Est per la divisoria d'aiges entre El Riu de Morella i La Rambla de Cervera, i al Sud pelllit de La Rambla Carbonera.L'estructura tabular dels estrats, element definitori d'aquest paisatge, t el seu origen en el fet que a l'Orogenia Alpina aquestes potents series centrals de calcaries, margues i argiles quasi no es van plegar, mentre que als marges, on la cobertera sedimentaria s ms prima, s que ho van fer.Per aixo, les diferencies tectoniques dins aquest paisatge a penes sn significatives.L'nic element geologic que condiciona uns canvis clars s la litologia, ja que quan les terres presenten una alternanl;a de paquets durs i blans es produeix una fisonomia paisatgstica diferent a quan allo que dominen sn les series massives de roques dures.Quant a les formes del relleu, en aquesta area predominen les formes creades per l'erosi, com passa a les capl;aleres i parts mitjanes de les conques fluvials.El modelat erosiu de la major part d'aquest sector sera condicionat per la citada alternanl;a de roques dures i blanes.La resistencia del rocam als mecanismes d'erosi fluvial ha estat desigual en aquestes series alternants.D'una banda, les litologies blanes (arenes, argiles i margues) han permes la genesi d'amples valls, com La Rambla de la Canada, El Riu Calders o El Riu Cantavella; d'una altra, les roques dures han suposat un seris obstacle a l'erosi i han protegit d'aquesta manera els paquets blans situats a sota.Aix s com
