Abstract
Comment la peinture vint-elle au Québec ? Cet ouvrage décrit plusieurs étapes, allant de la collection des œuvres sous le régime français à la création moderniste du XXe siècle. La conquête de l’originalité est le plus grand défi survenu en cours de route. Deux perspectives sont proposées : la peinture comme objet de prestige, la peinture comme institution. Lorsque peinture signifie tableaux, des lieux de culte, un marché, des collections et finalement des galeries et des musées s’organisent autour d’elle. Lorsque peinture signifie peindre, son essor est lié au nombre : pour quelques peintres élus, beaucoup doivent être appelés. Ces pages retracent l’avènement d’un corps de métier qui a décoré tant d’églises, restauré ou copié tant de toiles anciennes et fait tant de portraits. Devant sa matière étendue, cet aperçu a pour but d’initier le lecteur aux points saillants et de l’inviter à la découverte.
