Abstract
Rufus Patterson built this two-story Greek Revival house in 1857. At one time the original portico was replaced by a porch running across the front of the house. The original portico was restored around 1980. Patterson came to Salem in 1854 to manage the Salem Cotton Mill. He became a prominent member of the Salem community, serving as chairman of the Court of Appeals and Quarter Sessions, and later as mayor of Salem. His second wife, Mary Fries, was the daughter of Lisetta Vogler and Francis Fries, the early Salem industrialist.
