Dans le cadre de ce séminaire, j’aimerais aborder les grandes lignes de mon projet de thèse pour en argumenter la problématique et les fondements théoriques. Sommairement, mon projet doctoral a pour objectif d’approfondir notre compréhension du vieillissement en contexte canadien au regard des représentations sociales qui s’y rapportent et de leur rôle dans l’offre de service. Deux arguments soutiennent la mise en relation des représentations sociales disséminées par les médias avec les rationnels d’intervention couramment employés en milieu de service communautaire. D’une part, la recherche courante sur l’intervention gériatrique néglige la prise en compte des représentations sociales qui appuient la contextualisation et la compréhension des pratiques professionnelles et en légitiment leurs fondements. D’autre part, la nation canadienne est plus que jamais influencée par les nouvelles réalités des communications de masse, où circulent des idées et opinions plus transparentes, libres des rigueurs et des filtres caractéristiques des médias traditionnels (Suler, 2004). Ces conjonctures appellent à la contextualisation de leurs implications théoriques et pragmatiques au regard de l’expérience du vieillir. Cet échange vise d’une part à présenter le potentiel des contributions en service social gérontologique et, de l’autre, à en discuter la pertinence sous l’œillère psychologique.
