Abstract
Con el arribo de doctrinas y prácticas budistas a Occidente se difundió la práctica de construir estupas en esta parte del mundo. Las primeras fueron erigidas en Inglaterra (en el año 1980), Austria (1983) y EE. UU (1985). Actualmente, la estupa más grande fuera de Asia con unos treinta y tres metros de altura está emplazada en Benalmádena, España, y fue construida por iniciativa del maestro budista tibetano Lopon Tsechu Rinpoche en el año 2003 (Harvey, 1998). La Argentina también cuenta con estupas distribuidas en diversas regiones del país que se han convertido en espacios en los cuales no pocos argentinos deciden vivir el budismo mediante la devoción, la fe y la performance de un conjunto de rituales relacionados a estos monumentos, motivados por una serie de creencias vinculadas a sus efectos benéficos. En este trabajo proponemos un recorrido exploratorio por los procesos históricos, rituales y simbólicos vinculados a dos de estas estupas, ubicadas en las localidades de Epuyén y Bariloche, en el sur del territorio argentino, con el objetivo de dar cuenta de este fenómeno en el contexto local.
