Encore aujourd'hui, les lésions de la moelle épinière représentent un défi colossal pour la science et la médecine. La découverte d'un traitement efficace nécessitera un approfondissement des connaissances sur les processus cellulaires et moléculaires qui sont déclenchés à la suite de la lésion, notamment concernant la réponse inflammatoire et la dégénérescence wallérienne puisque ces deux réponses pourraient influencer la régénérescence d'axones lésés. À ce sujet, nous avons récemment démontré qu'il est possible d'induire une déplétion importante des cellules myéloïdes CD Il b + chez des souris transgéniques exprimant une forme mutée du gène suicide HSV -TKmt 30 sous le contrôle du promoteur CD Il b, un promoteur spécifique aux macrophages et aux granulocytes. Nos résultats indiquent que les cellules CD Il b + sont essentielles à la régénérescence d'axones périphériques et centraux en favorisant l'élimination des débris de myéline et des inhibiteurs de croissance axonale associés à ceux-ci de même que via la synthèse de facteurs neurotrophiques et pro-angiogéniques.
