Abstract
Scientists have a new way to find out which newly discovered distant planets might be hospitable to life. The Christian Science Monitor says an international team of astrophysicists can now determine a distant planet's gravity just by looking at slight variations in the brightness of it's sun. Their best guess is that the method'll narrow down the search so much that some form of life may be discovered on an alien planet within a couple of decades. The technique tells them how big and bright the star is, and if the planet is the right size and temperature to have oceans of water, and maybe life. Gravity's crucial to a planet having oceans of water. And astronomers say water on planets is crucial to life. One of the co-authors of a new study on the technique told the Vancouver Sun that he expects someone'll announce the discovery of life on an exoplanet within about 20 years.
