Abstract
La protection de la biodiversité est une préoccupation mondiale qui passe forcément par la conservation des habitats naturels. Au Québec, les municipalités sont appelées à jouer un rôle majeur afin de protéger les milieux naturels possédant un intérêt écologique situés sur leur territoire. La ville de Sherbrooke se trouve présentement dans une démarche visant la conservation. L’exemple de cette municipalité est utilisé afin d’appliquer la problématique à un cas concret. Il faut savoir que les milieux naturels confèrent aux citoyens et à la municipalité des bénéfices environnementaux, sociaux et économiques. Pour ces raisons, la ville de Sherbrooke a tout avantage à utiliser une diversité d’outils qui permettront à terme d’augmenter la superficie d’aires protégées : schéma d’aménagement, plan d’urbanisme, servitude de conservation, réserve naturelle, partenariat avec des organismes de conservation, etc. Avant tout, l’adoption d’une politique de conservation se veut une nécessité pour officialiser la démarche et la rendre transparente.
