Abstract
Tax registers, which were among the important sources of the 15th and 16th centuries, lost their importance in the 17th century as a result of the collapse of the timar system. As avariz tax (extraordinary tax) was turned into annual tax as of the first quarter of the 17th century and tax farming became widespread, avariz books (extraordinary tax registers) came to the forefront. In this study, Kırkkilise, Hayrabolu, Pınarhisar and Havass-ı Mahmud Paşa townships affiliated to Vize district were examined. The populations of centers of those townships, their neighborhood structures, and the populations of the villages affiliated to the above-mentioned townships were examined separately. Furthermore, those people who were members of military and religious classes in the townships of Vize district and the villages of such townships were tabulated.
