Una variazione sul tema dell’«abominoso ordigno». L’assedio di Ostenda nella "Bradamante gelosa" di Alessandro Guarini

Abstract
Nell’episodio che apre l’Atto IV della Bradamante gelosa di Alessandro Guarini – una tragedia a lieto fine rappresentata a Ferrara nel 1616 e rimasta inedita – il soldato Alcasto (già «Anselmo di Liguria») propone ad Agramante, trincerato ad Arles, di spezzare l’assedio posto da Carlo Magno con una potente mina. L’episodio, finora mai considerato dalla critica, apre una finestra sull’arte della guerra contemporanea all’autore e rielabora lungo i suoi 171 versi un particolare momento dell’assedio di Ostenda (1601-1604), episodio rilevante della Guerra degli Ottant’anni, di cui Guarini fu testimone: l’espediente delle mine introdotte sotto le mura per ordine del generale genovese Ambrogio Spinola. Il presente contributo, oltre a individuare il ricorso storico soggiacente al testo, studia i modi attraverso cui l’autore lo trasporta in letteratura: la comparsa della storia contemporanea nella favola tragica passa per una riappropriazione del modello ariostesco del canto IX, grazie al quale l’autore sviluppa una condanna dell’«abominoso ordigno» e dei moderni mezzi di conduzione della guerra, considerati diabolici.
