With the view of supplying the means of telegraphic communication between Quebec and the Lower St. Law- rence, the British American Telegraph Company have been urged to extend their line from Biviere-du-Loup, en bas, to Green Island Parish, and thence by a sub-marine telegraphic cable to Green Island Light House. The advantages of the extension are evident.1st.The amount of life and property which would, in case of shipwreck, be saved, by timely assistance being sent from Quebec.2nd.The transmission of the latest European news de- rived from Ocean Steamers.3rd.The great increase in the means of naval defence which the telegraph would afford.As there would be no regular business,onthe line the Company have petitioned the Government for a grant of £1,500, which would be the cost of the works, and an annual grant of £350 per annum in part of working expenses and maintenance.Should the Government acquiesce in the proposal, the annual cost to the Province would be, including interest, £440 per annum, which would be refunded by a tax upon each ship of five shillings, which the commercial body are willing to pay.(Quebec Board of Trade letter, pages 14 and 15.
