Graham and Vera were living together at 60 Frith Street when the British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain made his historic broadcast in September 1939 announcing that “this country is now at war with Germany”. Vera was working as London correspondent for the Belgrade newspaper Stampa, having previously been employed by a paper in Sarajevo, although it is not exactly clear what her position entailed.
