“Une admiration sans borne pour tout ce qui est romain”: La Mater admirabilis di Vincenzo Pasqualoni in Québec (con qualche appunto su Cesare Porta)
Bibliographic record
Abstract
This essay examines two altarpieces by the Roman purist Vincenzo Pasqualoni, a Mater Admirabilis and a Saint Michael (1876), in the votive chapel of Notre-Dame de Grâce at Saint-Nicolas, Québec, commissioned by the Laval theologian Benjamin Pâquet. It places them within the dispatch of Roman sacred art to ultramontane Québec, with notes on Giovanni Silvagni, Pietro Gagliardi and Cesare Porta, whose letters in the Archives du Séminaire de Nicolet document prices and volumes. Drawing on Magnan's history of the Pâquet family, Laval catalogues and records of the Séminaire français at Santa Chiara, it shows that the paintings, presented as originals in local sources, are composite copies after Pauline Perdrau's 1844 fresco at Trinità dei Monti and Guido Reni's Saint Michael, reread in an ultramontane sense. First hung in George Conroy's Québec residence during his apostolic mission (1877–78), they attest a militant adherence to Pius IX's anti-modern politics after 1870. The essay sets this against the present-day reduction of Québec's religious heritage to tourist scenery.

Teacher imitationNot calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. The Gemma side is a direct model label for every work in the frame, read from the title-only record. The Codex side is a classifier learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and calibrated to design-weighted sample rates; fields without enough sample support carry no Codex call. Candidate is the union of the two sides; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels.

Machine scores (provisional)
The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.
Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
