L'acousticien est constamment à la recherche des moyens de réduire le bruit rayonné par les structures dans le but d'améliorer les conditions de travail de millions de travailleurs exposé à des niveaux de bruit pouvant nuire à leur santé. Lors d'essais réalisés à l'ETS pour réduire le bruit de rivetage d'une pièce de fuselage d'avion, en collaboration avec Canadair (Deshaies 1996), un phénomène intéressant s'est produit. Les essais ont permis d'observer qu'il existait une pression de serrage optimale des mâchoires d'un encastrement menant à un faible rayonnement acoustique. À quoi cela est-il dû? Pour répondre à cette question, le présent document explore les mécanismes de dissipation d'énergie vibratoire dans les structures. \n \nCe document consiste en une étude des bilans d'énergies associées au mouvement vibratoire. Elle compare différents modèles analytiques de perte. L'efficacité des différentes méthodes connues de mesure de l'amortissement globale d'une structure est évaluée. Cette mesure d'amortissement permet d'évaluer l'importance de chacun des mécanismes de dissipation dans la perte totale d'énergie. Chacun de ces mécanismes de dissipation a sa mécanique propre qui fait varier son efficacité en fonction de différents paramètres: la fréquence d'excitation, les conditions aux limites, la géométrie de la structure, le matériau, etc.
