Það er vel þekkt fyrirbæri að konur séu hlutgerðar og lítillækkaðar í tískuauglýsingum. Mikið hefur verið fjallað um framsetningu kvenna í auglýsingum og áhrif þeirra á konur og karla almennt. Konur eru gjarnan sýndar á niðrandi hátt og karlinn sýndur sem einhvers konar alvaldur. Í þessari rannsókn verður greint frá túlkun unglinga á þessum auglýsingum. Allar auglýsingarnar sem unglingunum voru sýndar lítillækka konuna á einhvern hátt og er markmið rannsóknarinnar að sjá hvort unglingarnir geti bent á þessa niðurlægingu eða hvort þeir sjái hana ekki. Markmiðið er einnig að skoða hversu meðvitaðir unglingar eru um birtingarmyndir kvenna í tískuauglýsingum. Notast er við eigindlega rannsóknaraðferð Vancouver skólans í fyrirbærafræði og byggist rannsóknin á fjórum viðtölum við átta nemendur í 9. bekk grunnskóla á Akureyri. Niðurstöður rannsóknarinnar sýna að það er töluverður munur á því hvernig kynin túlka táknmyndir auglýsinganna og komu stúlkurnar almennt með athugasemdir um framsetningu kvennanna á myndinni á meðan að drengirnir bentu síður á að það væri eitthvað athugavert við myndirnar. Öllum hópunum fannst þó auglýsingarnar flestar frekar klámfengnar eða kynferðislegar og bentu á að konurnar á öllum myndunum væru mjög fáklæddar.
